What is Idlewild?  The original concept for Idlewild Adventure Company was “guide service”, but we have become so much more.

Where did the name of the company come from?  Idlewild’s founder, Ryan Cavender, lived on Idlewild Circle in Birmingham’s Southside where an adventure company was only a daydream.  When he launched the company a decate later, he asked everyone to choose between Idlewild and a host of other possible names.  The overwhelming majority voted for Idlewild.  Blue Bear was the runner-up.

Where is Idlewild?  Idlewild is everywhere, but we are based in the Magic City — Birmingham, AL.

How do I get in touch with you guys?  The best way to reach us is to fill out the Contact Us form or call us at 256.273.9596.

Is Idlewild insured?  Of course.

What is the minimum number of participants for a climbing trip?  1

What is the maximum number of participants for a climbing trip?  12.  If you would like to book a trip for a group of more than 12, please contact us so that special arrangements can be made to mobilize another guide.

What is the minimum age for participants?  8 years old.

What is the maximum age for participants?  There is no max.

What should I wear? Active apparel, footwear and a rain jacket are recommended.
  • Warm Weather – A tee, tech tee or tech short sleeve button down along with a pair of gym shorts, hiking shorts or some maneuverable pants is a good bet.
  • Cool Weather – A fleece, light jacket or vest along with a pair of maneuverable pants is the standard for the cooler months. A heavy jacket, gloves and head gear (to be worn with helmet) are suggested for cold weather.

What about climbing shoes?  Idlewild provides climbing shoes for all of our guests.  If you have your own, you are welcome to wear them, of course, or you are welcome to wear ours.

What if I wear a size 13 or greater shoe? Give us a heads up as early as possible after booking your trip and we’ll make special arrangements.

What if I have some gear? You are welcome to bring it, and if it passes inspection you are welcome to use it. There is no discount for using your gear rather than our gear.

Why are park permits for Palisades Park and Sand Rock not included in the outing’s price?  Palisades Park requires that a waiver and release be filled out on-site by an individual or their legal guardian; and purchasing a parking pass at Cherokee Rock Village at Sand Rock is required upon entrance.

What if the weather does not cooperate? Trips are on unless the weather creates unsafe climbing conditions. Idlewild guides have the authority to evaluate the safety of a climbing area and to determine the course of action for the party.
If the weather does not cooperate and the trip is cancelled guests will have the opportunity to reschedule the trip for any time within the next six months. The guest will also have the opportunity to receive a refund for the trip cost less the deposit.
What if I have a medical condition that may limit my ability to participate in a guided rock climbing trip? Consult your doctor to determine if a guided rock climbing trip is a wise move for you. If your doctor approves, please be in touch with us as soon as possible so that we can prepare accordingly to provide you with a safe and successful experience.
What if I get out there and don’t want to do it? It happens, unfortunately. Our guides still have to get paid, and our insurance doesn’t reimburse us for cancelled trips. There is no refund for a trip once the adventure begins. It’s only fair.

What is Tentsile?  Tentsile is a UK-based company that makes tree tents.  These portable tree houses are suspended between three trees, providing shelter and a unique hammock camping experience for up to six people.  The model that we currently offer is the Stingray.

Where can we camp in a tree tent?  Anywhere that there are three strong trees with a trunk diameter of no less than twelve inches that we can utilize as anchor points.  It is also possible to use other anchor points such as rock protection or steel infrastructure.  We can set it up in your backyard, in a park or campground, or anywhere else within reason and the bounds of the law.  If you have an idea, we are at least willing to entertain it.

What is the weight limit?  880lbs

How much room is there inside the tent?  The numbers (10’x10’x13’x4′) are deceiving.  There is enough room in the tent for three adults to sleep comfortably, or two adults to sleep comfortably with all their gear, or a couple of adults to sleep comfortably with a couple of kids.

How does the Stingray sleep six people?  There are attachment points for three hammocks to hang below the shelter provided by the Stingray floor and rain fly.  Idlewild also has a Trillium Hammock available as an accessory to the Stingray situation.  The Trillium sleeps three adults, so depending upon how high you are willing to go, you could possibly sleep nine under one roof.

How hard is it to set up?  It’s not hard if you’re working with any kind of experience with tents and/or common sense.  There are some tricky elements, but it’s easy to get off the ground.  If you are looking to get it way up off the ground, though, that’s another story.

What’s the story on getting way up off the ground?  Although the product manual recommends not exceeding a height of 4′, we all know this thing is going up as high as we can safely secure it.  If Idlewild is elevating your tree tent camping experience, our climbing guides will be using the same techniques that we employ on the rocks to keep each other safe.

How long does it take to set up?  Less than half an hour if it’s just off the ground, but considerably longer if it’s way up there.

What kind of warranty does Tentsile provide?  There is a one year limited warranty on Tentsile products.  The limitations relate mostly to the owner/user having reasonable expectations.
